Bills make the most obvious expected move with the release of Von Miller

It was fun while it lasted...or was it?

When the Buffalo Bills made the massive splash of signing future Hall of Famer Von Miller to a huge six-year, $120 million deal, the expectation was that he was going to be the closer that the Bills had lacked for so long. The season before signing Miller, Buffalo fell short against the Kansas City Chiefs in the infamous “13 seconds” game where the Bills couldn’t create a pass rush to stop Patrick Mahomes.

Instead of helping deliver a Super Bowl to Buffalo, Miller unfortunately tore his ACL in the middle of the 2022 season and his 2023 season was the most unproductive we have ever seen from him. The eight-time Pro Bowler was somewhat decent last season, but he was nowhere to be found throughout the playoffs.

The writing was on the wall that the Bills were more than likely going to be moving on from Miller and Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero confirmed that the Bills officially released Miller. However, both sides are open to a return.

Miller was due to make $17.5 million this season, so now Buffalo makes room for free agency. With it being reported that both sides are open to a potential return, maybe Miller is brought back for one more season on a lower number and the Bills get to keep their depth at edge rusher.

Brandon Beane swung big and missed with Von Miller signing

You have to give credit to general manager Brandon Beane for taking the huge swing to bring the future Hall of Famer to Buffalo to try and get the Bills over the top. It just didn’t work out anymore once he had his torn ACL.

With the Bills extending Greg Rousseau to a four-year deal with $80 million, the focus will now be on Rousseau to become Buffalo’s future star pass rusher. However, Rousseau has benefited a lot with having Miller alongside.

It will be interesting to see if Miller does indeed come back, or if he even wants to. While he has expressed how much he loves the Bills organization, the matching just hasn’t been what we all expected. On his way to the Hall of Fame, maybe Miller decides to call it a career. Or…maybe he takes one last ride with the team that helped him become a premier edge rusher, the Denver Broncos.
