The Buffalo Bills just pulled off a stunning move as they have fired head coach Sean McDermott, per Tom Pelissero. This move comes after the Bills lost in overtime this past Saturday against the Denver Broncos, which was one of the many heartbreaking losses in the playoffs under McDermott.

The Bills hired McDermott in 2017 and he only had one season where he didn’t make the playoffs, making him one of the best head coaches the Bills have ever had in their franchise history. However, under McDermott, the Bills could never get over the hump in the playoffs.
Year after year, they kept falling to guys like Patrick Mahomes and Joe Burrow. In this postseason, the Bills didn’t have to worry about running into them as they both missed the playoffs. Yet, the Bills still couldn’t get over the hump as they fell to the Broncos. This could have easily been the final straw for McDermott.
Bills will now look for Sean McDermott's replacement
McDermott finishes his tenure with the Bills with a 98-50 record in the regular season, but his playoff record was 8-8. Since 2019, he has led the Bills to 10+ wins each season that includes five consecutive division titles from 2020-2024.
The Bills made it to the AFC Championship twice under McDermott, but fell both times to the Chiefs in Arrowhead. For as successful as McDermott was in Buffalo, there comes a time where if you can’t get further than you have been, sometimes a change is necessary.
Now granted, Brandon Beane has not put together a solid roster together for a little bit. However, the biggest factor that fans need to remember is that the defense in Buffalo was a constant liability, and McDermott is a defensive-minded coach.
Buffalo has just created all kinds of chaos in the head coaching cycle. While the Giants and Falcons’ spots have been filled, there are still plenty of candidates out there that Buffalo can now explore. The Bills will immediately start this process as they are behind in the cycle.
