For the past two seasons, the Buffalo Bills have gone into games without a true No. 1 wide receiver on the offense. While Khalil Shakir has been a stable go-to guy for Josh Allen, he’s not a No. 1 in this league. He is a great slot receiver but Buffalo needs more than him for the passing attack.
Keon Coleman is trending towards bust status if he isn’t already there. Joshua Palmer was a bust of a free agent signing last season as he didn’t get into the endzone once and missed a ton of games to injuries. Gabe Davis and Tyrell Shavers both tore their ACLs in the wild card round, and Curtis Samuel may have played well in his last snap in Buffalo because he was not a contributor at all.
With Buffalo getting bounced out of the playoffs, they will be focusing on the offseason and they have no choice but to get wide receiver help. Prior to the trade deadline passing in November, Tom Pelissero reported that the Bills tried to trade for Jaylen Waddle but a deal wasn’t able to get agreed on.
Buffalo went on the rest of the season without a serious threat on the outside and it haunted the Bills in many games this season. Now, the front office has no choice but to bring one in and it’s clear who Buffalo should be checking in on.
Bills need to get Josh Allen a true WR1 (and it's clear who it should be)
Moe Moton from Bleacher Report put together winners and losers, as well as the biggest takeaways from the divisional round games, and Moton’s biggest takeaway for Buffalo is quite simple: "GM Brandon Beane Must Consider A.J. Brown Trade".
"Josh Allen doesn't need a No. 1 receiver to get the Bills to the playoffs, but the team may need one to reach the Super Bowl. "Moe Moton, Bleacher Report
Buffalo can play good regular season football without a true No. 1 WR, but it still does limit them at times. However, the playoffs are a different type of environment. The Bills could have benefited with having a true wideout that Denver would have to gameplan for.
While Josh Allen did have 4 turnovers, if he had a go-to guy on the outside that forced double coverage, that would have opened up the playbook more.
I know that A.J. Brown and the Philadelphia Eagles have had their troubles recently and maybe Brown has played his last down as an Eagle. If that is the case, Buffalo has to make a move for someone who can still change a game and increase the passing attack by a mile.
With the last two results being Buffalo being bounced out of the postseason and part of the reason why is because of lack of wide receiver talent, the Bills must bring in someone for Josh Allen. Even for as great as he is, even he needs a little bit of help on the outside.
