It has officially been a week since the Buffalo Bills made their first selection in last week’s NFL Draft. No one was shocked that the Bills traded down in the first round. What was shocking was seeing the Bills make three trade-downs in the first round that eventually landed them out of the first round.
That was only the start of the trades as well. We saw Buffalo trade up once, and then make a couple more trade downs to bring in extra picks. Ultimately, the Bills entered the draft with seven picks and turned them into ten selections. Brandon Beane pulled off a fantastic setup to bring in solid playmakers to Orchard Park.
The Bills’ first selection was drafting Clemson EDGE T.J. Parker, where he will learn from players like Bradley Chubb and Greg Rousseau. Buffalo ended up selecting Parker at No. 35, and they had acquired an early third round pick with their trade downs…but then they traded back up into the end of the second round to select Ohio State cornerback Davison Igbinosun.
Davison Igbinosun selection listed as Bills' most questionable draft pick (and it's not wrong)
Josh Edwards from CBS Sports listed each team’s most questionable draft pick and to no surprise, Igbinosun was listed for the Bills.
"Buffalo went defensive heavy for the second consecutive year. I liked a lot of what they did, but Igbinosun was more of a fourth-round type. He is a bigger body who gets a bit loose in coverage." said Edwards.
There is no question that Igbinosun has the experience to play in big games coming out of Ohio State. He is a big corner who is great in press coverage to throw receivers off of their routes. At the same time, he had a big time issue with being flagged for penalties throughout his career due to pass interference. The coaching staff for the Bills will have to fix that problem before he gets any serious snaps.
Even though the Igbinosun is rightfully being questioned, the Bills not only needed depth at cornerback, but they also needed to bring in someone who wasn’t afraid to hit and make contact with opponents. Jim Leonhard is looking to install a defense that is all about aggression and Igbinosun can bring that kind of mentality.
Selecting Igbinosun wasn’t the issue, it was how and when they made the selection. Buffalo didn’t just select him in the second round, they traded up to get him so they clearly saw a ton of value in him and didn’t want to lose out on acquiring him. Now, they will need to show fans that their process in how they got him can be justified.
