Ever since the Buffalo Bills brought in Brandon Beane as their general manager in 2017, one area that they have invested in when it comes to the NFL Draft is the defensive line. Buffalo has drafted players like Ed Oliver, Deone Walker, T.J. Sanders, Zane Durant, Landon Jackson, DeWayne Carter, Greg Rousseau, Boogie Basham, A.J. Epenesa, and Harrison Phillips.
In addition to the draft, the Bills have also added free agents like DaQuan Jones, Star Lotuleleu, Greg Gaines, Phidarian Mathis, and many more. Overall, Buffalo has invested a lot into their defensive line over the years. However, the defensive line has been a bit of an issue against the run in recent memory.
Maybe the change to a 3-4 defense under Jim Leonhard will help significantly, but that remains to be seen. While the Bills may have a rising star in Deone Walker who shined as a rookie last year, the Bills have to something to prove in terms of making sure that the defensive line does their part.
Even if the Bills' defensive line improves this season, it never hurts to add to it, even if they don't lose anyone significant.
Pending 2027 free agent should be on Bills' radar
Brendan Howe of FanSided.com wrote about an early preview of the current Top 10 free agents for next offseason, and even listed which teams should be interested the most. At No. 10, Indianapolis Colts' defensive tackle DeForest Buckner was listed and the Bills were pinned as a team that should be interested in Buckner:
"Buckner is a massive interior defensive lineman — he stands 6-foot-7 and weighs 295 pounds — who will have 11 seasons of NFL experience under his belt by the time he'd test the open market. He has 71.5 career sacks to his name." said Howe.
"With that size and experience — and Leonard Williams and Vita Vea signing extensions this offseason — Buckner could be the top guy at his position available." Howe added.
Buckner has been a dominant force throughout his career with the 49ers and Colts, and he is still competiting a high level. Even though he will be 33 years old next offseason, Buckner should still be able to add value to a team next year, whether it's with the Colts or someone else.
DeForest Buckner would provide great confidence boost for Bills' defensive line
The Bills already have a great big defensive tackle in Deone Walker, but imagine a pairing of Walker and Buckner on the same line...that would be a nightmare for offensive lines. Buckner can provide great pressure against the pass and help stop the run with his size.
We still have the entire 2026 season to play, but it's never too early to get a future look at which players are set to hit the free agent market next March, and see where they could be great fits.
A possible setup of Buckner and the Bills being paired together would create a great match for Buffalo's defense, even if it would just be for a year or two.
