When the Buffalo Bills decided to make Joe Brady their next head coach to take over for Sean McDermott, one of the biggest decisions that Brady had to make was to figure out who was going to be the defensive coordinator. Since the defense was under McDermott’s control, this was a major question that Brady had to answer.
Eventually, the Bills hit a home run with the hiring of Jim Leonhard who had been part of the Denver Broncos coaching staff the last two seasons. Leonhard also coached in college, where he was the head coach for the Wisconsin Badgers, and was also a player for the Bills in his playing days.
Leonhard was a coveted coach that was destined to land a defensive coordinator position, and the Bills got very lucky that they were able to get him. He has implemented a 3-4 defense which is different from what McDermott had with a 4-2-5 scheme. There are pros and cons to both, but with Buffalo's defense being a liability the last few seasons, a change was needed.
New defensive change gives Bills fans major hope
While the 4-2-5 scheme was about keeping the ball in front of the secondary, the Bills were still giving up a good amount of yards that allowed offenses to atleast get into field goal range. Not to mention, there weren't a ton of blitz packages as there was typical just four players rushing. The defense was also mainly in zone coverage which became stale.
With a 3-4 defense and the way that Leonhard has helped the Broncos, as well as his time at Wisconsin, there should be more aggressiveness in terms of bringing pressure and more man-to-man coverage.
Leonhard's first test will be this Sunday when the Bills take on the Texans down in Houston. Going into this matchup, Texans' head coach DeMeco Ryans talked about the overall new-look Bills, which includes Leonhard and what his defense will bring, per Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston.
"This is a new Buffalo Bills team, new head coach, new coordinators. Jim [Leonhard] brings more multiple front." said Ryans, per Wilson.
"They have a great front. A strong unit for them this year Jim has called in college." "He's not a newbie. He'll throw some good things at us." Ryans added, per Wilson.

DeMeco Ryans gives Jim Leonhard strong praise ahead of Week 1 showdown
Both defenses for the Bills and Texans will be battle-tested, and it will be up to Ryans and Leonhard to respond to any adversity. Ryans is one of the best defensive playcallers in the league and he has an elite defense with one of the best pass rusher units with Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter.
As for Leonhard, he was tasked to revamp this defense with new players like Bradley Chubb and C.J. Gardner-Johnson, who brings a new intensity and skillset to the defense. Leonhard has the chance to make a statement in Week 1 with Buffalo’s defense and show Bills Mafia what this unit is all about.
