Despite the greatness that the Buffalo Bills have in their organization and across their roster, they are not perfect whatsoever. No team ever is. Every team has some kind of obstacle that is in their way and sometimes it can be the defining factor that stands between a team reaching their ultimate goal.

In 2025, the Buffalo Bills had two big weaknesses on both sides of the ball; their wide receiver unit was below average, and the run-defense was absolutely atrocious. Under Sean McDermott and Bobby Babich, Buffalo's defense gave up on average 136 yards per game on the ground which allowed teams to keep Josh Allen and the offense off the field.

As part of the defensive scheme switch from a 4-3 to a 3-4 under Jim Leonhard, the Bills brought in edge rushers who can help out with improving this stat, such as Bradley Chubb and T.J. Parker. Buffalo is also moving Greg Rousseau to outside linebacker.

As far as the defensive line goes, the only notable addition that they made was drafting Zane Durant out of Penn State in the 5th round this year, which is not a splash at all. So now, the Bills are going into this season with Deone Walker as the primary nose tackle, but then after that it starts to become a bit of an issue.

It wouldn’t be a surprise to see Ed Oliver lined up more outside, but nonetheless, the Bills didn’t do too much on the defensive line to rebuild the run-defense, but it’s not too late either.

Bills pinned as potential fit for top DT to fix run-defense

Josh Crysler, who covers the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at The Pewter Plank, recently wrote an article on Bucs’ star defensive tackle, Vita Vea, and how he was a hold-in at Tampa's mandatory minicamp as he is looking for a new contract. Crysler talked about how if Tampa Bay was not looking to pay him big money, then there would be two teams who could benefit from adding Vea; the Buffalo Bills and the Chicago Bears.

"The Buffalo Bills ranked No. 28 in rushing defense last season, allowing 136 yards per game. They finished 12-5, but failed to win their division, thanks in large part to their porous run defense." said Crysler.

"Second-year defensive tackle Deone Walker is projected to be Buffalo’s starting nose tackle next season, but a team in win-now mode like the Bills could really benefit from a proven elite player like Vea." Crysler added.

Now granted, adding someone like Vea to this defense would immediately upgrade this defense all around. Vea is one of those players that is fantastic at stopping the run and he can provide interior pressure on a consistent basis. He is one of the very few defensive tackles who can do that.

On the other hand, I just don’t see the Bills making that kind of investment to which they would have to send a haul to Tampa, and then give him a new contract. That’s not Brandon Beane’s style, but never say never.

While Vea would be such a great addition for Buffalo’s defense, this scenario seems more like a dream than it does a reality.
