The Buffalo Bills acquired some well-needed wide receiver help this offseason by trading for DJ Moore from the Chicago Bears, and drafting Skyler Bell in the 4th round out of UConn. Moore should definitely make an immediate impact, but it may take Bell a little bit to develop as the season goes on.
Depending on who you talk to, there might be some people that think the Bills could always make another move to improve the wide receiver room. There is always room for an upgrade, but Mark Powell from FanSided.com put together a trade proposal that has the Bills making a trade for New Orleans Saints’ wide receiver, Chris Olave. However, it's not a great fit and the Bills should be looking to stay away from it.
Proposed trade for Chris Olave no longer makes sense for Bills
Powell's trade proposal has the Bills acquiring Olave in exchange for a 2027 2nd-round and 2028 3rd-round pick.
"The Bills are desperate and opposing teams know it. With the Chiefs coming back healthy to a crowded AFC this season, Buffalo may have already missed their opportunity to win a Super Bowl. Thus, Beane and Brady have to make up for lost time. Heck, the defending AFC champions reside in the same division." said Powell.
"New Orleans needs quantity. They've already lost three of their picks in 2027, though most of those are in the later rounds. Adding a 2027 second provides a valuable weapon to GM Mickey Loomis' arsenal. Sure, the Saints will not be able to add Jeremiah Smith at that spot, but next season's class is deep at the position, and should come far cheaper than Olave thanks to a rookie contract." Powell added.
Sure, Buffalo missed out on their one chance to win a Super Bowl without having to face the Chiefs, Ravens, or Bengals in the postseason. With that being said, I wouldn’t necessarily say that they are desperate because they are already a powerhouse. Their biggest issue that they have faced was their performance by the defense. Now with Jim Leonhard stepping in as the defensive coordinator, that should change for the better.
If the Bills didn’t have DJ Moore on the roster, I would say that going for someone like Olave would make complete sense. However, giving up two future picks for a receiver that has unfortunately dealt with concussion injuries throughout his career, and is also going to be needing a new contact sooner than later, is not something that the Bills should get involved with.
Adding Olave would definitely be a great upgrade talent wise, but the Bills would be playing a risky game of only having him for a year and then losing him along with multiple future draft picks.
Let’s not forget either that Joe Brady has been publicly supportive of Keon Coleman and what he could bring to this offense. In addition, adding Olave would push out the production that someone like Khalil Shakir and Dalton Kincaid would have in this offense, and both of them already know the offense that Brady will run.
Trading for Olave at this point doesn’t make sense for the Bills, so it’s best that they stay away from making this kind of trade.
