The defense for the Buffalo Bills has let up big plays in big moments that has made the Bills fall short of reaching a Super Bowl. For the past 9 seasons under Sean McDermott, who is a defensive-minded coach, Buffalo’s defense has let the fanbase down in the playoffs and it’s part of the reason why McDermott is no longer with the team.
However, it’s been their run-defense that has been the biggest problem. When it comes to defending against the pass, the Bills have typically done very well in that area. Even through the injuries in the secondary, the Bills always found a way to get their best out of their defensive backs.
While someone like Cole Bishop could become their best defender moving forward, cornerback Christian Benford as been one of the most under appreciated stars in the league. Being drafted in the 6th-round of the 2022 NFL Draft, Benford quickly rose as a starter and then eventually a star for the Bills’ secondary.
In four seasons with the Bills, Benford has only allowed an average of 10.8 yards per catch, per Pro Football Reference. He also had a career best of only allowing 54.4% of passes to be completed in 2025. However, his on-the-field presence is not being recognized at all.
Christian Benford faces total disrespect on recent CB rankings list
Jeremy Fowler from ESPN put together a list of cornerback rankings going into the 2026 season, and these rankings came from NFL executives, coaches, and scouts. Not only did Benford not get into the Top 10, he wasn’t even pinned as an honorable mention? I’m sorry, what?!
You mean to tell me that Benford is not even worthy of some kind of consideration? I find this extremely hard to believe considering the impact that he has had with the Bills since becoming a full-time starter. In 2024, Benford received votes for the Defensive Player of the Year award and he followed up that season with an even better year.
Benford is not widely known across the NFL and it’s extremely disappointing. I’m not saying that Benford is the best corner in the game because he isn’t. At the same time, he certainly is among one of the best but because he has been part of a Bills defense that hasn’t been great overall, he gets overlooked which isn’t right.
