The Buffalo Bills entered the new league year needing to free up some cap space in order to make some roster additions. Brandon Beane, who was not only kept after the firing of Sean McDermott, but was also promoted to President of Football Operations, needed to bring in a new coach and revamp this offense to create some space.
Once the coaching staff became solidified with Joe Brady, the focus turned towards the roster. One of the moves that the Bills did early on was restructure the contract of tight end Dawson Knox, but also giving him a 3-year, $20 million deal to keep him in Buffalo.
Knox was originally on a 4-year deal worth $52 million, giving him an annual salary of $13 million per year. Now, the Bills saved money and Knox gets a little bit of security with the team that he has been with his entire career.
Dawson Knox proves his commitment to Bills with contract restructure
Knox recently spoke with Eric Wood on the Centered on Buffalo podcast, and Wood asked Knox about what made him willing to take the paycut he did in order to stay with the Bills. Knox's response shows just how much he loves the Bills, and the community of Buffalo:
“It was very clear…I had a bunch of great talks with [Brandon] Beane and my agent, and we knew that I wasn’t going to be able to stay at the current cap number, cause it just didn’t make sense for them. I didn’t want to ask them to take that cap hit and keep me at that number, but at the same time I wanted an extension.” said Knox.
“I also knew that ‘yeah I could make more money if I hit the market and went somewhere else’. That’s just the nature of free agency. But, what Buffalo means to me, my wife, and now our baby, there was just nowhere else that even sounded appealing. We were forced to go through the options of like ‘hey, if the Bills can’t do it because of financial reasons or whatever, we’re going to have to be comfortable going somewhere else.’” said Knox.
“No matter what team we looked at or thought about we were like ‘golly, Lord keep us in Buffalo.’” Knox added.

The fact that Know knew that Buffalo was in a tough situation financially and he wanted to try and find a way to stay in Buffalo shows the type of person he is. He is one of the favorites amongst Bills Mafia and now that he is back with the team on a more reasonable contract, fans will get to see him keep making an impact along with Dalton Kincaid and Jackson Hawes.
