A new era is going to kick off for the Buffalo Bills here in just a few short months. It seems like yesterday that the news of Sean McDermott being fired broke to the public. Now, Joe Brady is stepping in as his replacement and also been through his first draft, period of OTAs, and mandatory minicamp as a new head coach. Up next is training camp.
Brady got promoted from offensive coordinator to head coach, keeping him paired with Josh Allen which is a great sign of continuity on the offense. Brady then hit a home run hire with Jim Leonhard, who will take over the defense and fans are hoping that he can turn the unit around for the better.
With the Bills in a win-now mode with Allen under center, the thought of hiring a first-time head coach can definitely be scary. Every year that the Bills don’t win the Super Bowl, their championship window closes a little bit. However, with Brady already have been in the building since 2022 and worked directly with Allen since then, it shouldn’t be a huge different outlook for the team.
Bills still expected to be among best teams in 2026 despite big changes
Lou Scataglia from NFL Spin Zone recently wrote about 5 teams who are “guaranteed to win double-digit games” in 2026 and the Bills were listed among with the Texans, Ravens, Lions, and 49ers. Three out of the four on this list are set to face the Bills this season as well.
"The Bills have won double-digit games each year since 2019, and they have also won at least 11 games each year since 2020. While the head coaching change is still notable, it's not something that should totally derail this franchise." said Scataglia.
"While there is no guarantee that Brady pans out as a head coach, the stability that this team has brought to the franchise in the Josh Allen era does not only give them a high ceiling, but the floor, as history tells us, is also very high. Buffalo will be just fine." Scataglia added.
Again, change can obviously be scary. But it’s important to know that Brady has already been with the Bills for a little bit and was the better coordinator on the coaching staff. Even though the offense certainly has had its problems, the offense is not the reason why the Bills were consistently knocked out of the playoffs.
The ultimate goal for the Bills should not be changing at all. They are still a championship contender and Brady walks into the best situation that a new rookie head coach could ask for. Now it’s up to him to deliver great results and prove that he can do what Sean McDermott could not.
