The biggest roster that the Buffalo Bills made this past offseason was making a splash trade to acquire wide receiver DJ Moore from the Chicago Bears. The Bills needed a true No. 1 receiver and Moore needed a change of scenery with the Bears’ offense evolving under Ben Johnson.
Josh Allen hasn’t had a true No. 1 receiver the last two seasons, not since Stefon Diggs was in Orchard Park. With Moore still in his prime, the deal made sense to make between Chicago and Buffalo. However, a lot of people believed that the Bears absolutely fleeced the Bills by getting a second round pick for Moore.
Moore’s first year with the Bears was one of his best seasons as a pro, when he had over 1,300+ yards with Justin Fields as his quarterback. In 2024, he had a rookie quarterback in Caleb Williams that featured a lot of struggles with the offense overall. Then in 2025, while the offense under Johnson changed for the better, there were also a bunch of playmakers added in the last two years.
It was time for DJ Moore for change out of Chicago
Moore's production went down the last two years, but there were so many factors that go into why it did. While a second round pick is no cheap price to pay, the Bills still ended up making two second round selections in this year's NFL Draft with the trades that they made.
Overall, the pairing of Moore and the Bills makes too much sense and Moore has already made a great impression during the summer.
DJ Moore is setting himself up for breakout year with Bills
Chris Landers of FanSided.com recently listed some of the biggest training camp overreactions (both good and bad) that are getting hard to ignore, and one of sections on Landers’ list talks about how Moore’s impact is showing that the Bills made the right move to get him to pair with Josh Allen.
"It seemed questionable at best when the Bills paid a WR1 price this offseason to acquire Moore from the Chicago Bears — despite the fact that Moore hadn't actually looked like a WR1 in two or three years. So far in camp, though, it's looking like this could be Stefon Diggs 2.0, as Moore is reportedly roasting anyone Buffalo puts across from him." said Landers.
"He's still just 29, so the talent shouldn't be in question, and he was a very good receiver as recently as two years ago. If he regains that form, it could transform Buffalo's offense." Landers added.
Let’s not forget, Moore was with the Carolina Panthers early on in his career and he had Joe Brady as his offensive coordinator from 2020-2021. During that span, Moore has back-to-back 1,100+ yard seasons and 8 total touchdowns.
Moore has done a great job throughout training camp to where he and Allen have connected very well, which is a great sign for what’s to come this season. Having his presence will take pressure off of the offense as he can create separation and create plays in the open field. Maybe we will see something in the preseason where Allen and Moore can give a glimpse of magic prior to Week 1 against the Houston Texans.
