Unlike the Buffalo Bills, their bitter division rival in the New England Patriots were pretty active since the NFL’s legal tampering period opened up. While the Bills managed to bring in some pass rush help with the signing of Bradley Chubb, the Patriots are adding help to build around Drake Maye and one of their signings was bringing in wide receiver Romeo Doubs.

The Patriots brought Doubs to the AFC East on a very questionable four-year, $80 million deal that seems like a huge overpay that has never reached 800 receiving yards in a season. While the Bills need another receiver to add with D.J. Moore, fans should be extremely happy that Brandon Beane didn’t make this kind of move for a receiver that is nowhere near being a No. 1 wideout for an offense.

Doubs is entering his prime and he gets the chance to become a potential No. 1 wideout for Drake Maye, but the Patriots made a serious risky investment with Doubs and Brad Gagnon from Bleacher Report recently talked about why the Pats signing Doubs to the deal they did is very risky.

"Doubs was a mere fourth-round pick in 2022 who was never able to sustainably establish himself as the No. 1 target in Green Bay. Even while putting up a career-high (but far from impressive) 724 yards in 2025, he was outperformed by Christian Watson on a per-game basis. But he becomes one of 24 receivers making $20-plus million per year, despite being a possession receiver who is likely best-suited as a complementary weapon." said Gagnon.

Yikes, yeah that is very risky when you put it that way.

Bills fans have chance to watch Pats' big WR investment go downhill fast

The Bills are the last team to talk about wide receiver decisions being made, especially with what they have produced the last two seasons. However, they went out and acquired D.J. Moore from the Bears who has had 1,000+ yard seasons four times in his career (twice with Joe Brady as his OC in Carolina).

Both Buffalo and New England are looking to revamp their wideout room a bit and they each have brought in help in different ways. The Bills are getting the proven veteran who has had success everywhere he has been. The Patriots are hoping that their new free agent signing can grow as Maye’s go-to target, but it’s extremely risky when you look at the price that they paid.
