In the Josh Allen era, the Buffalo Bills have experienced some of the most wild moments in NFL history that will go down as some of the best moments that fans will ever see. On the other end, there have been some big-time heartbreaks that have put Bills Mafia in disbelief.
There's been the "Hail Murray" in 2020 against the Arizona Cardinals, the infamous 13-second playoff game against the Kansas City Chiefs in 2022, losing to the Chiefs in back-to-back years by a field goal, and then there was last year's playoffs against the Denver Broncos where even though Allen had four turnovers, Buffalo's defense couldn't hold their ground against Bo Nix.
In most of the heartbreaks that the Bills have had in crucial games, it's been the Buffalo defense that has ultimately let the team down. Through six games this season, fans are getting another preview of continuous history happening again.
Bills' defense is holding back Buffalo from true full potential
Fans are seeing the same story with a different chapter of the Bills where Josh Allen and the offense are thriving while the defense is being a huge liability, and it was pointed out by Alex Kay of Bleacher Report.
Kay created a list of 11 overreactions now that Week 6 is behind us, and the very first one listed was "The Buffalo Bills can win without fixing their defense", which is just simply not true whatsoever.
"The Bills are an utter mess on that side of the football, conceding an average of 386.8 yards and 28.5 points per game to opposing offenses." wrote Kay.
"Only a handful of teams have lifted the Lombardi Trophy since 2002 without a top-10 scoring defense, and none have done so with a bottom-five scoring defense. The Bills cannot continue to lean on Allen and the offense to shoulder the burden of winning, as the plan will ultimately fail in spectacular fashion at some point during the playoffs." Kay added.
Another prime year for Josh Allen is at major risk of being wasted
When you have guys like Drake Maye, Sam Darnold, and Brock Purdy making the Super Bowl but Allen has yet to experience it, that's a major problem. Don't get me wrong, Allen has made plenty of mistakes throughout his career, but his playoff performance is not the reason why the Bills have failed to reach the ultimate stage.
It's been the defense, and it looks like it could be the same thing this year. Defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard was brought in to fix this unit in a new 3-4 scheme, and while the run-defense has made improvements, the pass-defense has taken a major hit because the Bills are constantly giving up the big play through the air.
For many years, Allen has seen the Bills' defense let the team down in critical games. With the way that things are going under Leonhard, that's the exact direction we are heading in once again. If Buffalo's season ends up being another chapter of heartbreaks in the Allen era, it's going to anger the fanbase as it will just be another wasted prime season under Allen.
