Having a quarterback like Josh Allen and not having made a Super Bowl appearance, let alone winning a ring is down right unreal. The Buffalo Bills have the most talented quarterback in the NFL and if it weren’t for him, the Bills would not be as competitive as they are.
In the Josh Allen era, the Bills have been to the AFC championship twice but have fallen short each time at the hands of the Kansas City Chiefs. They have made the playoffs every year since Allen’s second season and have one of the best rosters in the NFL. Unfortunately, things just haven’t fallen into place at the right time for them in the playoffs and it's because of the defense.
Bills defense has to do better to support Josh Allen and the offense
Every great NFL team has some sort of weakness and while the Bills vastly changed their defense hopefully the better, it will continue to be a weak spot until proven otherwise. Cody Benjamin from CBS Sports listed “biggest red flags for 2025 NFL contenders” and when it came to the Bills, Benjamin listed “Big-game defense” for them. Here’s a bit of what Benjamin said:
"Sean McDermott's defense might be the biggest impediment to a long-awaited Super Bowl run. This group's pass rush is setting up to be quite dependent on Joey Bosa, whose injury concerns have already carried over into Buffalo. And the secondary's trajectory could hinge upon either a rookie in Maxwell Hairston or an aging familiar face in Tre'Davious White."Cody Benjamin, CBS Sports
Whether it was because of injuries or lack of depth, Buffalo’s defense has become the major issue for the team in a go-big or go-home moment in the postseason. Since the 2020-2021 season, Buffalo’s defense has given up no less than 27 points in their playoff losses yet their offense has averaged over 24 points.
All that the defense needs to do is just get one crucial stop late in the second half and that could become the difference maker for the Bills to reach and possibly win a Super Bowl.
