Bills' defense continues to trend upwards through 2 preseason games

It's a small sample size, but it's great to see.

For the second consecutive preseason game, the defense for the Buffalo Bills has delivered an outstanding performance that has given fans a lot of hope for what could come in the regular season. The best part about what has happened through two games is that the unit that is expected to be the starters have only played a little bit early on in the first game against the Carolina Panthers.

In Saturday’s win over the Cleveland Browns, the defense once again shined and only gave up one 1st quarter touchdown to the Browns in their own stadium. Even though it was a majority of backups that were playing, the fact that the defense for the Bills has been so great through two games is extremely promising.

Bills' defense has another strong outing in preseason

The defense took care of business against Cleveland, plain and simple. While Shedeur Sanders got the Browns on the board in the first quarter, that was the only success that they had as an offense. Overall, Buffalo’s defense allowed just 194 total yards and only allowed the Browns to convert on three 3rd-down attempts out of the 11 that they had.

While the Bills’ offense managed to gain 20 first-downs, Cleveland had only 12, averaging just three first-downs per quarter. Buffalo’s defense managed to get 2 interceptions, 7 pass deflections, and they also recorded 5 QB hits. This was another great defensive performance by the Bills' defense which has looked better under Jim Leonhard.

In their first preseason win over the Panthers, the Bills' defense allowed just 201 total yards, and once again allowed just three 3rd-down conversions out of 11 possible times. Cornerback Kani Walker had an interception, and the defense had 4 pass deflections and 5 QB hits.

Jim Leonhard is showing early signs of Bills having great defense

I know, it’s just the preseason and it’s been the backups that have had the reps. However, to see this defense have back-to-back outstanding performances with their own backups shows how committed the players have been to the changes that have come this past offseason.

Even in the small time that the starters were out there against the Panthers, they made Carolina’s starters go three-and-out on three consecutive drives.

Buffalo’s defense has been the biggest liability for the team for the last few seasons. Leonhard took this defensive coordinator job with a big task to turn this unit around for the better. With all of the work that he has done this summer and now through two preseason games, he is showing that he means business and will look to elevate this unit.
