The Buffalo Bills have consistently been one of best teams in the league in recent years, but they have also routinely fallen short of reaching a Super Bowl. That led to an offseason shake up that saw Buffalo hire Joe Brady as the team’s head coach, and Jim Leonhard as the defensive coordinator.

With Brady running the show on offense, Leonhard is the shot caller for the Bills on the defensive side of the ball. With this being his first time as a defensive coordinator in the NFL, Leonhard is working to quickly establish his culture and make the Bills an elite defense.

Having great leaders helps that process, and the first-year defensive coordinator has already identified one of those leaders. Speaking with media members on Tuesday, Leonhard reveled that veteran safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson has been an early standout for Leonhard, with the defensive coordinator referring to the safety as someone who stands in front of the team and holds everyone accountable.

Jim Leonhard praises C.J. Gardner-Johnson’s leadership for Bills

Leonhard described Gardner-Johnson, who also joined Buffalo this offseason, as loud and someone who loves football — that shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone who has followed the safety’s career. The defensive coordinator also said that Gardner-Johnson has already asserted himself as a leader, holding everyone to a standard.

That pretty much describes the kind of player Gardner-Johnson has been his entire career. He has always been a vocal player who calls it like he sees it, and while that can sometimes rub people the wrong way, the safety has contributed to his fair share of success during his time in the league.

In his first seven years in the league, Gardner-Johnson played with five different teams. All of those teams had stretches as contenders while Gardner-Johnson was contributing, and he even helped the Philadelphia Eagles win a Super Bowl in 2024.

Johnson has actually been an impact player for all the teams he played with. In the 87 games he’s played in, he has started 71, recording 20 interceptions, 55 pass deflections, three forced fumbles, seven sacks, 280 tackles, and 27 tackles for a loss. Gardner-Johnson Also has been to the postseason in six of his seven seasons, playing in 14 total playoff games.

He now brings all of that experience to Buffalo, where he’s helping Jim Leonhard get things rolling defensively. If things go well for the Bills, Gardner-Johnson should be back in the playoffs, and could even win his second Super Bowl.
