With the Buffalo Bills already trading former nickel cornerback Taron Johnson to the Las Vegas Raiders, the Bills needed to be proactive in finding his replacement. After a thorough evaluation, the Bills quickly found their new man in cornerback C.J. Gardner-Johnson.
Gardner-Johnson previously played for the Chicago Bears under head coach Ben Johnson and was instrumental in helping the Bears turn their season around. He finished with 51 tackles, five TFLs, and two interceptions.
The Bills were fortunate to sign "CJGJ" to a one-year, up to $6 million deal without having to convert it into a long-term deal that would eat up cap space.
C.J. Gardner-Johnson will improve the defense immediately
With the addition of CJGJ to the team, he brings experience, versatility, and toughness. Let's take a look at why the team took a chance on him.
1. Ability to play multiple positions
• CJGJ began his career with the New Orleans Saints as a nickel corner. He had to cover fast slot receivers and more athletic tight ends.
• In his glory days with the Philadelphia Eagles, he transitioned into a traditional safety, where he was No. 1 in the NFL with six interceptions as a free safety in 2022. His versatility in moving into the box to play tighter to the line of scrimmage highlights his adaptability, which he would bring to both the Eagles and, later, the Bears.
• By attacking defensive schemes similar to the ones run by both Dennis Allen in Chicago and Jim Leonhard in Buffalo, he often is placed into the box. He cosplays the traditional linebacker role to either stop the run or sack the quarterback.
• In 2025, he played 33% of the defensive snaps in the box, where he recorded a career high of 3.0 sacks, which remains his career high to this day.
It will be a pleasure to have CJGJ enter Leonard's new defensive scheme, especially with all the many hats he wears. With adapting to the new 3-4 system, the multi-talented DB will fit right in.
2. Super Bowl experience
In CJGJ's first Super Bowl with the Philadelphia Eagles, against the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVII, he tallied four tackles. Unfortunately, they lost 38-35.
With the help of CJGJ's ferocious play in his second Super Bowl appearance with the Eagles in Super Bowl LIX, the talented DB had four total tackles and one pass deflected. The Eagles won the Super Bowl against the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22.
Having gone to the Super Bowl twice, CJGJ brings the experience of being in the "BIG" game and what it takes to prepare and stay focused. He can bring the leadership needed to get your team ready.
3. Coaching connections
While CJGJ never actually had Jim Leonhard as his defensive coordinator before, he has worked with other coaches who have been part of the successful coaching tree of Sean Payton.
When CJGJ was with the New Orleans Saints, Payton was the head coach, and the assistants on that staff were none other than current Bills offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael and current Bills head coach Joe Brady, who now get to be reunited with CJGJ.
Dennis Allen was also on that staff as the defensive coordinator before being promoted to head coach. CJGJ just came from the Bears, whose defense was coordinated by Allen (another Payton protege).
He also played under head coach Dan Campbell in Detroit, and Campbell was another one off the Payton coaching tree and is doing very well with the Detroit Lions.
When CJGJ won Super Bowl LIX with the Eagles, the defensive coordinator was Vic Fangio, but underneath him was former Eagles defensive assistant and current Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Christian Parker. He worked with current Bills defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard on the Denver Broncos under Sean Payton.
The bottom line is that the key factor in signing C.J. Gardner-Johnson was his influence with Brady, Carmichael, and the other coaches who had worked with Payton at some point in their careers.
And of course, all the talent he brings.
