Bills could get a good return for a couple of veteran defenders as they trim roster

The Buffalo Bills will eventually have to get their roster down to 53 players, and that could be accomplished by trading away a couple of veteran defenders.

With two preseason games left, the Buffalo Bills have more work to do before the regular season starts. However, as one of the best teams in the NFL, Buffalo is definitely ready to get to the games that count. Before that happens, the Bills will have to go through the tough process of getting the roster down to 53 players.

While nearly all of the players the team says goodbye to will be waived, there’s also a chance a few could be traded for draft picks. It’s always great to have more picks, and the Bills definitely have a few guys teams may be willing to trade for. Of course, one of the backup quarterbacks would be an option because of the importance of the position, but it doesn’t end there.

Logan Ulrich recently named players every team could make available for trade before the season, and two names who stood out from the group of Bills listed were Shaq Thompson and Dane Jackson. Both veteran defenders could be moved before finalizing the active roster.

Bills should explore trading Shaq Thompson and Dane Jackson

Thompson just came to Buffalo in June, signing a one-year deal with the team. After an impressive college career at Washington, he was drafted in the first round by the Carolina Panthers in 2015, and that’s where spent his first 10 years in the league. Now, on a new team for the first time, he’s trying to make a new home.

Jackson, on the other hand, also signed a one-year deal with Buffalo after playing in Carolina last season, but his NFL career started with the Bills. In 2020, the team drafted him in the seventh round, and he spent four years with the organization before leaving for one.

While Jackson and Thompson’s history with the organization is different, their current standing is the same. They are both veteran depth players on the defense. While they could stay around in those roles, the Bills are also pretty set in their respective positions. Since that’s the case, it would make sense to see if any teams are willing to send a late-round pick for one of the defenders.
