Prior to training camp starting, the backup quarterback position for the Buffalo Bills was overlooked due to the fact that Josh Allen is the star under center. In the Allen era, the Bills have had a revolving door of backups behind him since 2018.
They’ve had guys like Matt Barkley, Case Keenum, Kyle Allen, Mitch Trubisky, and now Mike White is in the mix. This is Trubisky’s second tenure with the Bills having signed back with them last offseason.
It looks like whoever is Allen’s backup this year will only be here for a year, but you never know. The competition between Trubisky and Mike White is a great storyline for fans to keep an eye on. Should Allen not be on the field, there has to be some sort of confidence in the backup to lead the offense.
In the Bills’ first preseason game, both Trubisky and White had the chance to show off what they could do and both of them were impressive. While Trubisky had more passing yards and averaged more yards per throw, White had two touchdowns and looked better on the field than Trubisky did.
Some fans are on the side of keeping Trubisky as the backup, while others are thinking that White should be QB2 behind Allen. Going into this Sunday’s preseason game against the Chicago Bears, both quarterbacks will be once again under pressure to succeed.
Bills' QB2 battle could help land Buffalo some trade value prior to Week 1
Moe Moton of Bleacher Report recently listed Mike White as a backup quarterback who could “increase their trade value” throughout the preseason. Here’s what Moton said about White:
"Unlikely to surpass Trubisky on the depth chart, White can gain traction on the trade market. Between 2021 and 2022, he threw for 2,145 yards, eight touchdowns and 12 interceptions with a 62.2 percent completion rate as a fill-in starter for the New York Jets."Moe Moton, Bleacher Report
I wouldn’t say it’s a guarantee that Trubisky takes the QB2 job, but it is more likely than not. He knows the offense better and has chemistry with the team.
On the other hand, White is more of an athlete than Trubisky and he had a better preseason game than Trubisky did. Not to mention, it would financially be better for the Bills to keep White over Trubisky.
At the same time, if the Bills can get themselves a 5th or 6th round pick for White then that’s a good return for a third-string quarterback in their eyes.
