The Buffalo Bills head into Week 4 as one of the five remaining teams that are undefeated through three games. In the AFC, it’s the Bills, Chiefs, and the Raiders. Then you also have the Vikings and 49ers in the NFC. Buffalo heads into Week 4 where they will host the New England Patriots in a matchup that is a bit of a trap game for the Bills.
Through their first three games, the Bills have dominated on offense in two games while the defense stepped up big time this past Sunday against the Los Angeles Chargers when Josh Allen and the offense looked lost.
There is so much positive about the Bills to discuss, but there are also negatives that they will need to improve. However, they have one major weakness through the first three weeks that they need to fix immediately if they want to keep their momentum going.
Bills' penalty issues could cost them games this season (and they need to fix it quickly)
In Week 1 against the Texans, the Bills had 10 penalties for 85 yards and the Bills only won by five points. In Week 2 against the Lions in their new Highmark Stadium debut, the Bills committed 5 penalties for 46 yards. Buffalo ended up winning that game by ten points. Then this past Sunday against the Chargers, the Bills had 10 penalties for 88 yards.
The Bills have had 25 accepted penalties...that is absolutely ridiculous. Through three games last season, the Bills had just 14 accepted penalties. They have nearly doubled that number which is not a great sign for Joe Brady's start of his coaching tenure.
Now granted, Brady has the Bills at 3-0 which is impressive by itself. There's no denying that. At the same time, he has to find a way to lower this number down because eventually, it's going to cost them a game that they should have won.
Undisciplined football can lead to big losses
The thing about these 25 penalties is that it's coming from both sides of the ball. On offense, we've had numerous amount of penalties on the offensive line. As for the defense, there's been a mixture of roughing the passer and defensive holding/pass interference.
With the Patriots coming to town this Sunday, the Bills are going to need clean up the penalties because for as talented as they are, it's hard to overcome the penalties when it feels like they are nonstop.
