Last night in the world of college football was a highly anticipated moment for the University of North Carolina as they were being led into the season by a new head coach in Bill Belichick. That’s right, arguably the greatest coach in NFL history for the New England Patriots who left New England after the 2023 season.
Belichick was hired by the Tar Heels to turn the program around and it caught the attention of football fans in general, not just college football. UNC kicked off their season against the TCU Horned Frogs and it couldn’t have gone any worse for Belichick and the Tar Heels. TCU came into Chapel Hill and delivered a 48-14 beatdown to UNC and completely embarrassed Belichick’s debut as a college head coach.
We usually don’t see a Belichick-led team get destroyed like this, but it’s not the first time we have seen something like this. Up until last night, Belichick’s worst loss in his coaching career in terms of points given up took place in January, 2022 in the wild card round against the Buffalo Bills.
In the first round of the playoffs that year, the Bills gave the Patriots a 47-17 beatdown that essentially the gave the Bills the AFC East from there on out. The Bills scored on every one of their drives other a kneel down to end the game and scored nothing but touchdowns.
Josh Allen had more passing touchdowns than he did incompletions. Both Devin Singletary and Dawson Knox had two touchdowns each, and the Bills sacked Mac Jones three times and intercepted him twice. Being a Bills fan at that time was magical. Not for Belichick and the Patriots though.
Bill Belichick's college debut is similiar to blowout loss to Bills in 2021-2022 playoffs
For nearly two decades, Bills fans had to endure the almight New England Patriots led by Tom Brady and Bill Belichick. Buffalo just never had an answer to beat the Patriots no matter how hard they tried. It did take Brady leaving the AFC East for the Bills to take the division away from New England and give Belichick a bit of payback.
Belichick has a rough start to his college coaching career and will have to do a lot of work to bounce back from this mess of a start. As for the Bills, they are preparing for their Week 1 home opener on Sunday night where they will host the Baltimore Ravens.
