Even though there are teams in the NFL that have some of the best rosters and/or coaching staffs, no one is ever perfect. The Buffalo Bills surely aren’t perfect at all, but they delivered a promising offseason after it started with Sean McDermott being let go. There was a ton of uncertainty surrounding the Bills, and there still might be a little. However, definitely not as much as there was back in January.
While the Bills could always look to improve their roster, the only major area of concern that they have is depth at the inside linebacker position. After that, there is no major need that they must address before the regular season. However, one of their division rivals definitely have a major area of weakness going into 2026.
Last year’s AFC East champions, the New England Patriots, are looking to prove to the entire NFL that them having one of the easiest schedules last season was no fluke. While they seem to have their franchise quarterback in Drake Maye, they have one area on their defense that isn’t great and it’s their pass rush.
They ranked 26th in sacks (35 total), and they lost arguably their best pass rusher in K’Lavon Chaisson in free agency to the Washington Commanders. Their addition of Dre’Mont Jones in free agency doesn’t exactly provide a major boost for them either. Kristopher Knox from Bleacher Report listed a veteran edge rusher that could be a great addition for the Patriots, and it should concern Bills fans.
Bills must hope best landing spot for veteran edge rusher doesn't happen
Knox listed edge rusher Jadeveon Clowney as an ideal addition for the Patriots, which would give them a veteran who has played some solid football over the last three years with Ravens, Panthers, and Cowboys.
"Jadeveon Clowney has never quite played up to his status as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2014 draft. However, he's become a very disruptive run defender and a solid late-career pass-rusher-for-hire option." said Knox.
"Even at age 33, Clowney could boost just about any defensive front as a rotational player. However, he would be a very strong fit for his former Tennessee Titans head coach, Mike Vrabel, and the New England Patriots." Knox added.
Clowney has 23.5 sacks over the past three seasons, and he has turned it up in terms of stopping the run at or behind the line of scrimmage as well. Him being in New England’s defense could very well cause trouble for the Bills, especially when Buffalo may try to establish their run.
I’m not saying that Clowney is a massive game-changer, but he provides just enough value to have someone else shine. With the Bills and Patriots now battling against each other for the division for the foreseeable future, the last thing that Bills fans should see is the Patriots be provided quality veteran help while they still have Drake Maye on a rookie deal.
