When Joe Brady accepted the head coaching job for the Buffalo Bills in January, he was also accepting the expectations that Bills fans have moving forward. Even though Sean McDermott could never reach the Super Bowl, he helped create a foundation in Buffalo that is about winning and being a consistent playoff contender every season.

Buffalo has been on the door step every year since 2019, but they just kept falling short. You could say it was mismanagement of game situations, lack of offensive talent, or the defense falling apart. Heck, you could even say that it was because the Kansas City Chiefs just always got one more better play than Buffalo.

Either way, with the Bills losing the divisional round in a playoff format that didn’t have the Chiefs, Ravens, or Bengals, it was time for a change. That change ended up with Sean McDermott being shown the door.

Brady will now be tasked to elevate the Bills more than they already have been, and it won’t be an easy task. The expectations are high, and a former Bills receiver who is a fan-favorite reemphasized the pressure that Brady faces going into this season.

Stevie Johnson just turned the heat up on Joe Brady going into 2026 season

Former Bills wide receiver Stevie Johnson spoke on Good Morning Football and described this upcoming season as “the most anticipated and exciting season of the Bills franchise”.

I’m going to say for the Buffalo Bills, this will be the most anticipated and exciting season of the Bills franchise. Why? Because last year they were a Top 5 offense, and we still somehow felt like this team was being held back by something.” said Johnson.

"Was it Joe Brady? Was it [Sean] McDermott? We don't know what it was. But now that the Bills have moved on from McDermott, now we have Joe Brady. Now we are all focused on. Let's see what this guy can do. This guy who had a dominant LSU team. This guy who has been dominant in the since coming in. Since coming to Buffalo, he's only had a Top 5 offense. So now let's see what he has when he has 100% of the reign over this team." Johnson added.

With McDermott out, Brady will have to prove that the Bills hiring him was the best decision for the franchise. Again, McDermott never made it to the Super Bowl, but he did win and he brought division titles to Western New York. If Brady can’t do that in his first season as the head coach, fans are going to be very angry.
