It’s that time of year where bold predictions are stated when it comes to free agency, and what trades could possibly happen. At this point, with all of the wildness we have seen in years prior, anything could really happen. The Buffalo Bills are no secret team within this territory.
They have acquired players and sent players away as well. Their cap space is not a great situation so there might be some unpopular yet necessary moves. They have a group of players that are taking up a ton of cap space, so Brandon Beane will have to get creative to not only get out of the negative but also create some room to bring new players in.
At the same time, the Bills cannot be reckless either to create cap space. Don’t get rid of your top players as long as they perform at a high level. One of those players is left tackle Dion Dawkins, who was listed as a top trade asset for the Bills by Alex Ballentine of Bleacher Report. Along with Dawkins, Keon Coleman and Dawson Knox were also listed.
"Dawkins would be incredibly difficult to replace. He's still one of the top pass-blocking tackles in the league. But they would likely get multiple valuable picks in return and they need inexpensive pieces to re-tool the roster." said Ballentine.
Bills must not consider the thought of trading Dion Dawkins
Dawkins is a franchise left tackle and has been for the Bills since getting drafted in 2017 out of Temple. He’s the one that has continuously protected Josh Allen’s blindside and his pass blocking is elite. Does he have rough games? Sure, who doesn’t? At the same time, you have to pay your guys to protect the franchise.
It’s easy to replace a tight end, a guard, or even a running back. It’s not easy at all to bring in a blindside protector whose job is to keep the franchise upright rather than running for his life. Look at what happened with Patriots’ left tackle Will Campbell in the Super Bowl…he gave up 14 pressures and Drake Maye had almost no time to let a play develop.
People talk about how Josh Allen is the most important player of the team, but he needs protection in order to carry the team. That’s where Dawkins comes into play.
As long as Dawkins is in his prime, the Bills should not even consider the thought of trading Dawkins away. He is beloved by the team and the community, and he is great at what he does as well.
