After nine seasons with the Buffalo Bills that included five division titles and eight playoff appearances, Sean McDermott was fired yesterday by the Bills after another heartbreaking playoff loss. It was the same continuous ending with the Bills; losing in the playoffs in heartbreaking fashion.
Lots of people are furious that Buffalo decided to make this change. However, Buffalo can't undo it and now they have to focus on their next steps, as does McDermott.
While Buffalo is now looking for their next head coach, McDermott has said that he is still planning to coach, per Adam Schefter. While three head coaching vacancies have been filled, there are still plenty of options for McDermott if he were to get some looks.
Top HC landing spots for Sean McDermott
Pittsburgh Steelers
This feels like an obvious fit. Mike Tomlin stepped down from the Steelers and they are underway in their head coaching search. McDermott and Tomlin were teammates in college at William & Mary, and McDermott understands the toughness that Pittsburgh has when it comes to not just the team, but the city as well.
However, people will say that this could be Mike Tomlin 2.0, which is a fair statement. However, McDermott has had more recent success than Tomlin, which would make him a bit of an upgrade from what Pittsburgh has had the last few seasons.
Baltimore Ravens
Much like Pittsburgh, Baltimore just seems like another great fit for McDermott. He would have the chance to go from Josh Allen to Lamar Jackson, so the quarterback position wouldn’t be an issue. In addition, Baltimore is a very physical football team and McDermott would be able to inherit a defense that hits hard.
In addition, Buffalo and Baltimore always have a true chance to meet in the playoffs and maybe McDermott would have the chance to get some revenge. However, the Ravens right now are planning to interview Bills’ offensive coordinator Joe Brady for a second time this week.
Las Vegas Raiders
This might come out of left field, but the Raiders have a chance to do great things if they hire the right coach. While McDermott would be taking over a rebuild, that’s what he did with Buffalo back in 2017. However, he would have the chance to build up the roster as the Raiders will have a great amount of cap space and they also have the #1 overall pick.
A lot of people are thinking that Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza will be the first overall pick and he has a ton of talent. McDermott would get a fresh start with a brand new quarterback that he could have a say on draft night.
