We are getting closer to the 2026 Buffalo Bills schedule release and it is time to take an early peak ahead. During this stage of the offseason, we all try to find any insights we can in order to get a beat on what the Bills may do in the coming season.
As contenders in the AFC, the Bills face one of the tougher schedules in the league. There are plenty of premier matchups to focus on, but what are some of the worst-case scenarios facing the Bills ahead of their schedule release?
3 nightmare scenarios for Bills ahead of NFL schedule release
A Chiefs/Ravens/Rams/Broncos/Chargers gauntlet
The Bills have made some substantial improvements to remain in contention, but the schedule could make things more difficult than they need to be. In 2025, they had the good fortune of having their premier games broken up, for the most part.
With so many premier opponents – the Kansas City Chiefs, New England Patriots (twice), Denver Broncos, Green Bay Packers, Los Angeles Rams, Baltimore Ravens, Detroit Lions, and Chicago Bears – there is a good chance that the Bills face a tough stretch they must survive rather than thrive in. Fans have to hope that this isn't the case.
An early bye week
Finding the right bye week is important for a team. Everyone is going to feel the grind and face injuries but having a bye week at just the right time can be pivotal for keeping the team refreshed heading into the stretch run.
Last season, the Bills had their bye in Week 7. It felt like they were constantly battling injuries and trying to keep key players in the lineup over the final 11 games. Having a bye week sometime after Week 10 would be good for providing a refresher and breaking up the schedule more evenly.
Facing the NFC North late
The NFC North is in the running for the toughest division in football. Coming into 2026, the Minnesota Vikings look like the worst of the bunch and they went 9-8 a season ago. It is going to be a tough stretch no matter what.
Facing two or three of their NFC North opponents late in the season would be a major slog. Having the Lions and Bears at home certainly helps, but there are few “easy” games on the schedule this season.
Tough sledding in 2026
The Bills had a worse-than-average schedule in 2025, but things tick up substantially in 2026. Only the New York Jets, Miami Dolphins, and Las Vegas Raiders look like “easy” games, but we know that anything can happen on any given day.
If the Bills are going to get over the hump when it matters most, they will potentially enter the playoffs having gone through an absolute gauntlet of tough games. It will certainly push the term “battle tested” to the limit.
