There hasn’t been a ton of down-to-the-wire games for the Buffalo Bills this year, but this Week 9 matchup against the Miami Dolphins was added on that list for them. It was back-and-forth from start to finish and neither team had more than one possession lead against each other. It was a completely different story this time around than in Week 2.

Even though there were moments of nervousness, the Bills prevailed and now find themselves at 7-2 with no one near them in the AFC East. Not to mention, they take another season series for the third consecutive season against Miami.

The Bills pushed through for a close 30-27 victory. Division games are always tough, no matter what each other teams records are.

There were some turning points in this game that went the right way for the Bills that helped get this win. However, if one of these moments didn’t happen, we might be talking about how Buffalo would have been shocked by the Dolphins with a potential loss. Good thing we don’t have to.

Looking at the three turning points in Bills vs. Dolphins

Raheem Mostert’s early 3rd quarter fumble

It was a defensive battle in the first half, but the Dolphins were ahead 10-6 going into halftime and were receiving the kickoff in the second-half. Things were starting to not look so great for the Bills. Even though their defense had been playing solid football, there was no guarantee that the Bills were going to make the necessary adjustments.

Early on in the third quarter, Miami running back Raheem Mostert had a 15 yard reception that brought the Dolphins into Bufflo territory. On the very next play, Mostert ran for seven yards and cornerback Taron Johnson punched the ball out to force a fumble and Kaiir Elam made the recovery to give the ball back to Josh Allen.

Had it not been for this crucial turnover, the Dolphins were on their way to potentially taking an even further lead against the Bills.

Ray Davis’ breakaway touchdown

The Bills didn’t get into the endzone until the third quarter when Josh Allen connected with Mack Hollins midway through the third quarter. After Buffalo’s defense gave up a field goal and the Bills were down by one, it took the Bills only two plays to retake the lead off of a Ray Davis 63-yard touchdown reception.

Allen did a simple dumpoff pass towards the sideline to Davis, who had open field ahead of him after making two defenders miss and he took it all the way to the house. That touchdown have the Bills a 20-13 lead after a successful two-point conversion.

Tyler Bass’ franchise record-setting game-winner

The end of the game down to the leg of Tyler Bass, which has been so inconsistent this year. At one point, the Bills had brought in competition for Bass a couple of weeks ago just to apply some pressure to him. Now this week, Bass is the most beloved player in the building because not only did he kick the game-winning field goal, he did it from 61 yards out.

His 61-yard game-winner set a franchise record and it put the Bills up by three points with five seconds left, essentially giving the Dolphins a heartbreaking loss.
