A great upgrade, just the wrong position.

It’s hard to believe that we are already approaching Week 9 of the NFL season. It feels like yesterday that we were just getting ready for the start of the season, and the anticipation for the Buffalo Bills was growing because of all of their offseason changes that they made on the coaching staff and the roster.

Up to this point, the Bills have ben very successful under head coach Joe Brady. They are at 6-1 and currently rank No. 1 in the AFC, but they have a tough battle coming up this coming Monday night against the Minnesota Vikings, no matter who is under center for them.

Even though all of the focus is on the now for Brady and his team, the front office led by Brandon Beane has to be doing their job of scouting future NFL talent for when next year's NFL Draft comes around.

Bills' approach to 2027 NFL Draft is obvious

Is Buffalo's offense perfect? No, but they sure are one of the best units in the league. They have had to carry the Bills' defense throughout this season which isn't sustainable. It's been the defense that has been the big problem for Buffalo.

They have the 24th-ranked overall defense, and their biggest problem is that they can't stop the pass. Up until this past week against the Baltimore Ravens, they were allowing teams to throw for over 285 yards per game. The secondary has been very bad to put into simple terms, and it shows that Buffalo is going to have to address it in the offseason no matter what the outcome of their 2026 season is.

However, Ryan Wilson of CBS Sports created a 2027 NFL mock draft that has the Bills going with defense in the first round, just not at the position that you may expect.

2027 NFL mock draft has Bills going in a different direction for defensive help

Wilson has the Bills selecting Notre Dame EDGE Boubacar Traore, who is a fantastic pass rusher, but it's not the position that the Bills should be focusing on with the defense.

"The Bills would love some LB or secondary help, but Traore is the best player available. He's a hair-on-fire pass rusher who is also stout against the run. Given the Bills' overall defensive issues, you can never have enough guys capable of getting after the quarterback." Wilson wrote.

Traore has 24 total tackles and 3.5 sacks on the season so far for the Fighting Irish, along with 2 forced fumbles. He's already over halfway his career-best in sacks (6.5 in 2025).

Even though you can never have enough pass rushers in the NFL, the Bills have more pressing needs to take care of on defense. The secondary needs a boost, and it wouldn't even be a bad idea to bring in another linebacker before you go with a pass rusher.

The defensive line for the Bills is their strongest unit on defense and they already have enough pass rushers under contract beyond this season. Again, you can never have too many pass rushers, but Buffalo has other needs to take care of before they added to their defensive line.
