Buffalo Bills 2023 NFL Draft Target: Cody Mauch (North Dakota State)

Cody Mauch is an odd fit for the Buffalo Bills, not because of him as a player, but because of how he measures up on paper. At already 24 years old, he is old for a project, and he is small for a guard at 6’5” and just 302 lbs with small hands and short arms for an interior lineman. Like Torrence in Round 1, this would buck a trend of drafting young, big, long, toolsy guards who need coaching and development.

Mauch makes up for his size with quickness and athleticism, clocking a 40-yard dash time of 5.08 seconds and athleticism. He entered college as a tight end (walking on at North Dakota State) and could have the ability to give the Bills positional flexibility or check in as an eligible receiver on certain plays.

Mauch will not cost the Bills a first round pick, as he is projected to go in the mid-to-late second round. He would be an ideal option if they choose to draft a pass-catcher in the first round, or if he falls slightly and is available to them in the third round. He could start from day one for many teams if needed, but this should not be the Bills primary concern given their current projected starters.

He is an ideal pick if they sign a guard and can give some time to develop and coach Mauch to fit their scheme. I would look for him to start the season as a rotational piece, with his role growing over the course of the year.

Overall this is an exciting draft class, and there are several other players who could make a lot of sense for the Bills depending on who else they add via free agency or trades. Regardless, drafting an Offensive Lineman who they project to be a part of their future, and who can contribute in some manner this season should be a high priority as they seek to improve their O-line.
