Buffalo Bills Mock Draft: A subtle trade lands tremendous value
By Ryan Heckman
Dawson Knox is one of the better all-around tight ends in football today, and this isn’t a spot they will find someone nearly as good. But, the Bills go for depth behind Knox and Quintin Morris here by selecting Miami Hurricanes tight end Will Mallory.
Mallory likely won’t come in and set the world on fire, but he does a lot of things well. He isn’t exceptional in any area, but he’s consistent in both the passing game and in run blocking.
At 6-foot-5, 245lbs, Mallory has good enough size to be a staple in both of those areas, specifically on third down or on the goal line.
The Bills have three very capable running backs in Damien Harris, James Cook and Nyheim Hines. They’re also all different in their skill sets. But, the opportunity to snag Minnesota’s Mohamed Ibrahim this late is too good to pass up.
The Bills very well could end up keeping four running backs on this roster and deploying them all in some fashion, with Hines being able to take on the “offensive weapon” type of role in some instances. Hines will also contribute on special teams in a big way, as evidenced by his big plays last year.
Ibrahim comes in as a guy who endured a tough injury two seasons ago, and last year still managed to have a big year, rushing for 1,665 yards and 20 touchdowns. He is a high-volume runner who loves exploding through contact and isn’t brought down easily.
Again, this is a mere depth and value add, but Ibrahim is far too talented to let slip past this point in the draft.
