Breaking down the Buffalo Bills offense through the first four games

The Buffalo Bills had high hopes coming into the season with a great defense but a question mark on the offensive side of the ball with the departure of offensive coordinator Brain Daboll. Ken Dorsey has done a phenomenal job through four games as the new offensive coordinator, mixing up the quarterback run game and the usual spread concepts utilizing his playmakers.
Even in the loss to the Miami Dolphins, the Buffalo Bills high octane offense was very efficient with long drives on an excellent defense, with 497 total yards and 63 past attempts. The Bills were able to move the ball just had trouble making the critical plays.
The offense so far looks to be hitting on all cylinders, ranking fifth in points scored with an average of 28.5 points per game.
The struggles have come when the Bills simply beat the Bills. They were struggling in the first half of the game against the Ravens adjusting to the elements and a stout Baltimore defense. Ken Dorsey made some great adjustments at the half and the Bills came out looking like a well-oiled machine meticulously moving the ball down the field by death of 1,000 paper cuts.
The Bills and Kansas City Chiefs can score anytime they want in any way they want to, with very similar schemes and QB styles. Ken Dorsey has used Josh Allen as his chess piece in the run game and opens up the passing game.
Meanwhile, Josh Allen is taking what the defense gives him. Opposing teams want to force the Bills’ offense to put together 12-18 play drives to beat them. Josh Allen understands this and Ken Dorey is molding the scheme perfectly around Josh and the weapons at his disposal.
The Bills’ offense has performed well but has slowed down the past two weeks after coming out red hot against the Los Angeles Rams and Tennessee Titans. They can be much better than the product they’ve shown the Dolphins and Ravens.
The running game needs to be more consistent with the running backs. If the running game can get going and the offense adapts to what defenses are showing them, it can be near impossible to stop.
Josh Allen is one of the premier players in the league, he is a dual threat that can take over a game quickly. The Steelers are up next and a Mike Tomlin lead defense will be a tough test will see if the Bills can get back on the tear they were at in Weeks 1 and 2.
