Player 1: Jalen Catalon, S Arkansas

Jalen Catalon is an impressive, intelligent safety prospect who is a dangerous playmaker for any defense. While a little undersized at 5’10, 199lbs Catalon does lack some physicality. However, as a centerfielder who can play multiple different types of coverages.

In addition to lining up off the ball, Catalon can be moved into the slot and play both press and off coverage. He is the type of versatile safety that NFL teams have been searching for. He does struggle to get off blocks and is not the most reliable tackler on the backend.

Due to his size, there could be some concern about how he will deal with NFL size and speed, but I think Catalon has the best instincts of this entire safety class. He makes up for what he lacks in size in play recognition and instincts on the field.

Reads like this are the type of plays that are often occurrences for Catalon. This is the type of recognition and processing that

Fit with the Buffalo Bills:

Catalon has a similar size profile to Jordan Poyer, who is in the last year of his deal with the Bills. While Poyer offers more physicality than Catalon, his elite coverage skills will be hard to replace. Catalon could be the closest safety prospect in terms of similarities to Poyer in this draft class. Not only that, his versatility and ability to play multiple coverages lined up at different positions gives the Bills the exact type of player he wants.
