O.J. Howard and Tommy Sweeney

There has been plenty discussed around the idea of the Buffalo Bills running more formations on offense this season, including two tight end sets. However, there are some questions about how effective that second tight end might be.

The two players most likely in line for that spot alongside Dawson Knox would be O.J. Howard and Tommy Sweeney. Neither player really made their presence known against the Colts as they combined for no receptions on three targets.

Howard’s only target came on the first drive of the game on fourth down when Keenum tried to fit a pass between a few defenders in the end zone. It would have certainly been a tough play but the veteran tight end needs to start making some of those plays.

As for Sweeney, his first target came a few plays earlier on that opening drive when Keenum targeted him on first down from the 11-yard line. It wasn’t until the closing seconds of the first half that Sweeney got another opportunity as the Bills tried to move into field goal range but Sweeney would drop the pass.

The Buffalo Bills are going to keep at least one, possibly both, of these players on the 53-man roster. However, one of them will need to step up to make the two-tight end sets a bigger part of this offense.
