Who replaces Jordan Poyer at safety?
The Buffalo Bills lost safety Jordan Poyer last week due to an elbow injury and the team should be cautious about bringing him back. He likely will miss all of the preseason with the focus being to have him ready for the regular season opener against the Los Angeles Rams.
This question of who replaces him during the preseason may end up not being much of a question if the Buffalo Bills keep Micah Hyde out as well. However, if Hyde does play it will be interesting to see which backup safety gets the start next to the All-Pro.
The most likely candidate would be Jaquan Johnson as he has been with the team since 2019 and did get the start last year in place of Jordan Poyer when he missed the game against the Houston Texans.
If it isn’t Johnson, then the most likely candidate is Damar Hamlin, who was a sixth round draft pick last year by the Bills.
The Buffalo Bills haven’t had a chance to see much from either player due to how durable Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer have been. There could be some benefit to having Johnson and Hamlin playing a majority of the preseason to try and understand where they are and how they might do if the Bills lose a starter for an extended time during the season.
