Looking back at the Buffalo Bills appearances in the Hall of Fame game
The first preseason game of the 2022 season is set to be played tonight when the Las Vegas Raiders and Jacksonville Jaguars face off in Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium. While the Buffalo Bills are not in the game this year, they have played in it four times since the first game back in 1962.
However, are 0-4 in those appearances and have yet to win when in a Hall of Fame game.
Looking back at the Buffalo Bills’ appearances in the Hall of Fame game
The first time the Buffalo Bills played in this game was in 1974 when the Buffalo Bills played the St. Louis Cardinals and ultimately came up short after losing by eight points by a final score of 21 to 13.
The next time the Bills appeared in this game would be 15 years later when they would play Washington in 1989. Once again the Bills came up short in a game that really wasn’t competitive as they would lose 31-6.
The Bills’ third appearance in the Hall of Fame game would be 20 years later and in 2009 they faced the Tennessee Titans. The team once again would lose, by a final of 21-18, but it was a notable game as this was the first time Terrell Owens would appear in a Buffalo Bills uniform.
While starters typically don’t play in this game, Owens was on the field for the first series and had two receptions for 27 yards.
The last time the Bills were in the Hall of Fame game was 2014 when they played the New York Giants and lost 17-13. Their last appearance in this game might be a perfect example of just how far this franchise has come over the past few years.
Fans would not need to look past the quarterbacks who appeared in this game as the three quarterbacks who played were EJ Manuel, Jeff Tuel, and Thaddeus Lewis with the three combining for only 152 passing yards.
The Buffalo Bills have not had much success in the Hall of Fame game over the years but if they return sometime in the next few years it may end up being a different story.
