Punches were thrown during practice
On Saturday, the headline from practice was the “fight” that broke out between Josh Allen and Jordan Phillips near the end of practice on a two-point conversion. On the play, Phillips bumped Allen and the starting quarterback took exception to it and pushed Phillips back which brought both sides together into a pushing match.
However, on Monday it looks like there was another fight, and this time with punches thrown. According to Matt Parrino, defensive end Boogie Basham got into it with rookie offensive lineman Luke Tenuta. The fight seemed to start after Tyrel Dodson had his helmet pulled off.
There is no question that training camp fights are almost expected with hitting now allowed with pads on in practice. The hope is that they can be limited and that there are no serious injuries that occur from them.
Sean McDermott was asked prior to practice about the fight between Josh Allen and Jordan Phillips and what the message might be to the team. He said he would rather have to tell players to tone it down than “kick them in the tail and ramp up the intensity.”
In the end, it seems like these things are inevitable and the hope is that they don’t escalate too much and players aren’t hurt.
