The Buffalo Bills welcome veterans to training camp a few days earlier than other teams this Saturday. The Bills are afforded this luxury because they open up the NFL season against the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday, September 8th.
As veterans report to camp, there will be tons of speculation about what Bills veterans are potentially on the roster bubble. Every year, there seem to be some obvious choices due to salary cap savings or implications.
However, this season, not many veterans are at risk of being cut, which saves the Bills all that much money. Additionally, we saw that Brandon Beane is not afraid to keep veterans regardless of salary cap savings if he views them as essential pieces of the roster. Just last season with Mario Addison, we noticed that many Bills fans and analysts were sure he would be cut.
Here are some veterans who may risk losing their spot on the Buffalo Bills’ 53-man roster if they fail to live up to expectations in camp and the preseason.
Which players on the Buffalo Bills could be fighting for a roster spot?
Cody Ford
Cody Ford’s career with the Buffalo Bills has primarily been a disappointing one. The former second round pick has failed up to his draft spot and has simply been one of the main concerns of the Bills’ offensive line when he plays.
Although he has registered 29 starts over his three-year career, they have not been convincing. Ford has shown minimal year-to-year improvement and lacks the positional versatility to be a quality backup. Over his career, Ford had never registered a PFF grade over 54 and had his worst grade last year when he recorded a 46.4 PFF Grade.
Ford has more competition this season with Ryan Bates returning and the additions of Rodger Saffold, Greg Mancz, and Greg Van Roten at the guard position, as well as David Quessenberry who can play both guard and tackle.
In the past, Ford has been fighting for a starting role. However, this offseason, it is clear that Ford will have to fight for a roster spot with this caliber of players now at guard.
