3 ways the Buffalo Bills offense can improve in 2022

Last year, the Buffalo Bills had one of the best offenses in the NFL and ranked in the Top 10 in key categories like total yards (5th), passing yards (9th), rushing yards (6th), and points (3rd).

They did a very good job of staying on the field and extending drives as they ranked fourth in first downs and third in the league in 3rd down conversion percentage by converting over 46% of their third down attempts.

However, with all the good that Josh Allen, Stefon Diggs, Dawson Knox, and Devin Singletary did last year there is still room for improvement. The Bills made some moves this offseason that should help and these are three ways the Bills’ offense in 2022 could be even better.

Yards After the Catch Average

Last year, the Buffalo Bills finished 19th in yards after the catch with 1,760 but this was due to how much the Bills threw the ball. When looking at the average yards after the catch per completion the Bills finished last in the league at only 4.2 yards after the catch per completion.

Last year, the Buffalo Bills didn’t have any players who had great quickness or speed to create separation. In fact, the Bills didn’t have a wide receiver who averaged more than five yards after the catch with Isaiah McKenzie having the highest average at the position with an average of 4.1 yards.

This year, the Buffalo Bills should be improved in this area after the addition of James Cook. Last year, the top four players who led the team in this category were running backs or fullbacks for Buffalo. This is not surprising considering that running backs are usually catching the football near or even behind the line of scrimmage.

However, there was no running back on the roster who has the speed or elusiveness of James Cook and if he is a big part of this offense this is a stat that should significantly improve this season.
