Where Buffalo Bills rank among first-time Super Bowl contenders

The Buffalo Bills enter the 2022 season with one of the best rosters in the NFL and in turn are considered one of the top Super Bowl contenders in the league. In fact, they recently were picked as the team with the best chance to win the Super Bowl among teams still in search of that first Lombardi Trophy.

Sayre Bedinger at NFL Spin Zone put together her Top 3 first-time contenders and the Bills were ranked ahead of the Los Angeles Chargers and Cincinnati Bengals.

"Adding Von Miller is a championship-type of chess move but the Bills didn’t stop there.In the 2022 NFL Draft, they added Kaiir Elam to the secondary with their top pick, addressing an area of weakness that was exploited in their heartbreaking playoff loss to the Kansas City Chiefs."

It is hard to disagree with where the Bills were ranked as they are in the best position to win their first Super Bowl. This year’s team is the most-talented roster they have had since the early 1990s when Buffalo would reach the title game four straight years but come up short each season.

As Bedinger noted, the moves of signing Von Miller and drafting Kaiir Elam addressed two of the major needs for this team, which were an inconsistent pass rush and a secondary that struggled without Tre’Davious White.

The addition of Miller is especially important because he has been to the Super Bowl before and can be a leader in the locker room.

Road to the Super Bowl won’t be easy for the Buffalo Bills

The other thing that Bedinger’s rankings highlight is just how tough the AFC is and if the Buffalo Bills reach the Super Bowl, it will certainly be earned. The other two teams she mentions reside in the AFC and this doesn’t even include teams like the Kansas City Chiefs, Denver Broncos, and Baltimore Ravens who all have a great chance to represent the AFC in the Super Bowl.

While winning the top seed in the AFC is always important, this year is even more crucial because having home-field advantage throughout, along with a first-round bye, is going to be a big advantage.

Is this the season that the Buffalo Bills bring the Lombardi Trophy to Western New York with a Super Bowl victory? Time will tell but I agree with Sayre Bedinger that of the first-time contenders, Buffalo is in the best position to win their first Super Bowl in franchise history.
