4 things we learned from the Buffalo Bills’ minicamp
James Cook is exactly what this offense needs
For the third time in four years, the Buffalo Bills drafted a running back but James Cook brings a unique skill set that Devin Singletary or Zack Moss don’t have. He was viewed as an electric playmaker when he gets the ball in space and will make more of an impact as a receiver than a running back.
That was on display during the minicamp and according to Sal Capaccio of WGR550, he looked good during practice.
"Rookie running back James Cook is as explosive as advertised with the ball in his hands. It’s been evident through two days. He’s smaller and has a great feel for putting himself in a position to set up blocks, which allows him to then escape to the open area and use his speed. It’s going to be really interesting to see how offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey utilizes him, especially in the passing game to get him in space."
The Buffalo Bills had one of the top offenses in the NFL but one area they struggled with was getting yards after the catch. They averaged only 4.2 yards after the catch per completion, which was the lowest average in the league.
James Cook with his speed certainly can help in that regard but as Capaccio notes, it is going to be interesting how the new offensive coordinator is able to incorporate Cook into this offense.
