The Buffalo Bills have a number of players who could be in line for a contract extension before the 2022 season and one of those is starting safety Jordan Poyer. He reportedly requested a contract extension in April and has not been at OTAs yet this year.

The average salary of his current contract has him ranked 13th among safeties at just under $10 million. After his first All-Pro season, he likely would be looking for a contract that could put him inside the Top 10.

However, the Top 10 could look very different over the next few months with a number of players at his position potentially getting new deals over the next few months. These are four players that if they get a contract extension could impact negotiations between Bills and Poyer.

Which players could impact the Buffalo Bills negotiations if they agree to extensions this summer?

Minkah Fitzpatrick

Minkah Fitzpatrick was a first round pick by the Miami Dolphins in 2018 but was traded midway through the 2019 season to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

He has had 352 career tackles, 13 interceptions and 36 passes defended which are comparable to what Poyer did during the same time frame with 424 tackles, 13 interceptions and 23 passes defended with the big difference being Poyer has eight sacks to Fitzpatrick who has zero.

The good news for the Buffalo Bills is that a new deal for Fitzpatrick may not get done until right before the start of the season, similar to T.J. Watt’s deal last year. While Poyer is unlikely to get the same length of a contract, his representation will likely look at average salary as a starting point if Fitzpatrick gets a deal soon.
