The Buffalo Bills recently were ranked as the best offense in the league on NFL.com

Last year, the Buffalo Bills ranked in the Top 10 in a number of categories including total yards (381.9), passing yards (252.0), rushing yards (129.9), and points per game (28.4).

This success didn’t stop Brandon Beane from trying to improve this group and he did it by adding skill players like Jamison Crowder and O.J. Howard as well as drafting James Cook in the second round and Khalil Shakir in the fifth round this offseason.

These players join Stefon Diggs, Gabriel Davis, Dawson Knox, and Devin Singeltary to give Josh Allen a great group of playmakers. Ultimately though it is Josh Allen that makes this offense run and he is one of the top quarterbacks in the league with the way he has developed as a passer to complement the threat he brought as a runner.

Recently, Cynthia Frelund of NFL.com put together her list of top offenses this coming season based on projected win share. According to Frelund, win share “measures each player, position group and side of the ball’s ability to earn/prevent first downs, points and touchdowns”

"The foundational piece, of course, is elite QB Josh Allen, whose pressure-evasion rate in 2021 ranked second-best in the NFL (24.3%, per Next Gen Stats). He also threw the second-most touchdown passes on tight-widow throws (eight, per NGS). The free agency addition of Jamison Crowder and draft selection of Khalil Shakir help Buffalo’s slot-production potential, giving defenders more players to account for and inherently opening up throwing lanes for Allen."

The key piece really for this offense is Josh Allen and the pressure falls squarely on their quarterback. Over the years, Bills fans have seen how much impact a franchise quarterback can have on the offense after struggling to find that answer for almost two decades.

However, Brandon Beane and the front office have really done a good job of finding the players to put around him to make him better but also ones that complement each other very well.

One area is in that short, intermediate area in the middle of the field. In the past, it has been Cole Beasley that has been able to take advantage of those short passes with the attention on Stefon Diggs and Emmanuel Sanders/Gabriel Davis on the outside.

The biggest change this year on the field is at running back with the selection of James Cook as this gives the Bills their best pass catcher out of the backfield in the past three years. It is going to create mismatches and help Allen read the defense before the snap as Cook is a player that can be split out wide to determine whether the team is playing man or zone defense.
