Buffalo Bills Fifth Round Pick (168th overall): Tariq Castro-Fields, CB (Penn State)

In the fifth round, the Buffalo Bills return to the cornerback position to select Tariq Castro-Fields out of Penn State. While it isn’t necessarily common for teams to double up at positions, the Buffalo Bills have not been afraid to do so. Last year, their first two picks were on defensive ends and then their next two picks were offensive tackles.

Tariq Castro-Fields is an experienced cornerback who played 46 games over five seasons with the Nittany Lions. He finished with 139 career tackles, three interceptions, and 25 passes defended.

He certainly has the size to play cornerback and do well in zone at 6’1″ and 197 pounds but one reason this pick may not be a great fit is that he isn’t a great tackler. The one constant that the Bills have typically looked for in all their cornerbacks is that they are willing to help against the run and do a good job of limiting yards after the catch with their tackling.

The idea of adding multiple cornerbacks this year certainly makes sense as the Bills have uncertainty after Tre’Davious White and Dane Jackson with a number of inexperienced players. By bringing in another cornerback, it gives them a better chance of solidifying the depth at the position.
