Could the Buffalo Bills add another veteran wide receiver at some point this offseason?

The Buffalo Bills’ wide receiver position looks to be fairly set at the top of the depth chart with Stefon Diggs, Gabriel Davis (who had a breakout performance in the AFC Divisional Round), and new slot receiver Jamison Crowder.

The team also has Isaiah McKenzie, who could have an expanded role but at a minimum will remain as that versatile chess piece in this offense. They also have some depth with players like Marquez Stevenson, Isaiah Hodgins, and Jake Kumerow.

However, that may not stop general manager Brandon Beane from strengthening a position that already looks fairly strong.

Pro Football Focus lists the Buffalo Bills as potential fits for Odell Beckham Jr. and Julio Jones

Recently, Brad Spielberger put together a list of the best fits for some of the top remaining free agents. While the Bills were not listed as the best fit, they were named as potential fits for Odell Beckham Jr. and Julio Jones.

It could make sense for the Bills to add a veteran wide receiver but they should be careful about who that player is. The reason is that Gabriel Davis looks like he could be a star in this offense and whoever they do add, should not take away snaps from the former fourth-round pick.

It would be hard to imagine either player would be interested in coming to Buffalo to essentially play a backup role in this offense. It also remains to be seen how much OBJ could contribute this year as he suffered a torn ACL during the Super Bowl and likely doesn’t look like he will be ready until the final weeks of the regular season.

A big question is would the Buffalo Bills want to try and change their offense once Odell Beckham Jr. is recovered, especially if it has been working well, at that point in the season?

The other challenge is that Buffalo has limited cap space after the moves they have made this free agency. If the Bills were to sign either, it would almost certainly be a below-market contract.

However, there have been plenty of occasions where veterans chose to come to a team in hopes of getting a Super Bowl ring and do so on a below-market value contract along with playing a limited role. If either player would consider that move, then it certainly would make the wide receiver position better suited to handle any potential injury to a starter during the season.
