4 Buffalo Bills potentially already fighting for roster spots after free agency
Tommy Sweeney
Another player who could be fighting for a roster spot this summer is tight end Tommy Sweeney. He was a seventh round pick by the Buffalo Bills in 2019 and has stepped in as a starter at times as a rookie and then again this past season.
Last year, the Buffalo Bills had only two tight ends on their 53-man roster and typically only had one active on game days towards the end of the season. It was Sweeney who was that second tight end last year but entering OTAs and training camp, Sweeney is expected to compete for that spot with O.J. Howard.
The Bills signed the former first round pick as a free agent in the first week of free agency after he spent four seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. While Howard never developed into that game-changing tight end, he has become a productive player. One area, in particular, is as a run-blocker, which is something Buffalo missed last year after trading Lee Smith during the offseason.
If the Buffalo Bills look to run more two tight end sets this season, it would make sense to keep three tight ends on the roster and that third spot would likely go to Tommy Sweeney. However, if Buffalo only keeps two tight ends, then Sweeney is going to have a tough time remaining on the roster.
