Buffalo Bills 2022 Free Agent Profile: Quarterback Mitchell Trubisky
Last offseason, the Buffalo Bills made a surprising signing when they added Mitchell Trubisky on a one-year deal. The former first round pick joined the team as the backup and was viewed as a type of reset to his career.
He certainly got that reset and now looks poised to return to being a starting quarterback in the NFL. Let’s take a look at the player and what he brought to Buffalo last year.
Career Overview
Mitchell Trubisky was the second overall pick by the Chicago Bears in 2017 and stepped in as the starter almost immediately. He would start 12 games as a rookie and threw for 2,193 passing yards with seven touchdowns and seven interceptions.
In 2018, he had a breakout season that earned him a trip to the Pro Bowl after he threw for 3,223 yards with 24 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
However, he was not able to regain that type of success in Chicago and while he showed some good things, it wasn’t consistent. In 2020, he began the season as the starter before being benched but would then return to that role for the final seven games, including one playoff game.
2021 Season Recap
Thankfully Josh Allen stayed relatively healthy over the course of the year and Mitchell Trubisky saw limited playing time. He appeared in six games over the course of the season throwing only eight passes, completing six of them, for 43 yards with no passing touchdowns and one interception.
He did have 13 rushes for 24 yards and did have one rushing touchdown.
Should the Buffalo Bills re-sign Mitchell Trubisky?
The short answer is yes but at this point, it seems unlikely. The reason being is that Mitchell Trubisky came to Buffalo as a reset of sorts after an inconsistent start to his career with the Chicago Bears.
He certainly got that reset and when considering the free agents that are available at the position and the teams looking for quarterbacks this offseason, he should have a great chance of finding a starting job with a new team in 2022.
