Comparing Josh Allen’s season to the 2022 AFC Pro Bowl quarterbacks
By Mia Claydon
Justin Herbert vs. Josh Allen
Named 2021 Chargers MVP, Justin Herbert has proven himself as one of the NFL’s most reliable young QB’s. He was picked 6th overall in the 2020 Draft from the University of Oregon, meaning he has concluded his second season in the league. His rookie year saw great accolades, including winning the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year. Herbert set multiple records as a rookie QB, such as most passing touchdowns (31), most passing yards per game (289.1), most 300 yards passing games (8), most completions (396).
But how has this season proved for the 23-year-old QB? How does it match up against QB1’s? In 17 games, Herbert attempted 672 passes, completing 443. This is only a minor difference to Allen’s 646 attempted passes and 409 completed.
The Chargers QB passed for a huge 5014 yards this season, almost 600 more than QB1 (4407). Herbert threw 38 TD passes, and 15 interceptions, almost identical to Allen’s 36 passing TDs and 15 interceptions. Despite this, rushing is not a vital part of Herbert’s game. In fact, Allen’s total rushing yards (763) is over twice a much as Herbert, who picked up 302 yards. QB1 picked up double the amount of rushing touchdowns (6) to Herbert (3) too.17’s strength is also shown after comparing the number of times both QBs have been sacked this season. In 2021, Herbert was sacked 31 times; compared to Allen’s 26.
Both players have had a phenomenal season, and after comparing the two, it’s obvious that each player has their strengths. For Josh, it’s his rushing ability while for Justin it’s consistent pass completion ability.
Overall, I believe Josh Allen should have been selected in the initial roster in place of Lamar Jackson. Despite two solid previous seasons, injury problems, and missed game time for Jackson meant Allen could prove just how good he is – if you cannot tell from his stats, you can definitely tell during a game.
Josh is a leader on and off the field, a hard worker, and just loves the game of football. His quick decision-making has won the Bills games at multiple points in the season and has put a large number of points on the board. Stats do not show those aspects, which should have only boosted his chances further, in my opinion.
