The Buffalo Bills should not be looking to add the New York Giants’ tight end

The 2021 NFL Trade Deadline is quickly approaching and the Buffalo Bills should be buyers and looking to add talent to a roster that is already one of the best. However, one of those players should not be New York Giants’ tight end Evan Engram.

He is one of the popular names being mentioned less than a week from the deadline and the Buffalo Bills would seemingly make sense as a potential landing spot. Recently, Ralph Vacchiano mentioned the Bills as a possible destination for the former Pro Bowl tight end.

The thought process by picking the Bills makes sense as they are going to be without their starting tight end, Dawson Knox, for a few weeks and don’t have much depth behind him. However, the reason this doesn’t make sense is that it doesn’t appear like it will be a long absence for Knox. He probably would be back about the same time that Engram would be up to speed and ready to contribute.

What would the Buffalo Bills offense look like once Dawson Knox returned?

Another reason why this doesn’t make sense is that the Buffalo Bills haven’t really used many two-tight end sets this year. According to Sharp Football Stats, they have run only 53 plays all season with more than one tight end on the field.

It remains to be seen if this was just due to the lack of depth or if the Bills would rather run more four wide receiver sets, which they rank near the top of the league in.

After the way Knox started the season, it wouldn’t make sense to take away snaps from him when he is healthy and able to return. This would force Engram into a backup role and if they don’t change their playbook, he is unlikely to see much playing time.

If the Buffalo Bills were to look to add to the tight end position, a player like Eric Ebron would make more sense. He is a veteran tight end who wouldn’t necessarily take snaps away from Knox but has the experience to step into the starting lineup if Knox misses more time later in the season.
