Vernon Butler

While defensive end has been a point of discussion, the defensive tackle is another position where the Buffalo Bills may be looking to trade someone. If they do try to trade a player, Vernon Butler is the one most likely to be moved.

Vernon Butler was signed as a free agent last offseason and was primarily a starter for this defense after they lost Star Lotulelei last offseason, who opted out due to the pandemic. Now that Lotulelei is back, Butler is expected to return to a reserve role.

The challenge is the Buffalo Bills have two other good defensive tackles competing for those backup spots in Harrison Phillips and Justin Zimmer. Both of these players have played well this preseason but Phillips has some questions in regards to a knee injury he suffered against the Bears.

If this is expected to linger into the season, this could change the team’s approach to the position and who they keep on the 53-man roster. However, if Phillips looks like he could be back in time for Week 1, Vernon Butler should be a player Beane is having trade discussions about.
